Burt’s Bees Buzzes into SA

When I was in New York a while ago, I went on a natural beauty binge. I bought all the things. Seriously. Amongst the million beauty products that I had researched, a Burt’s Bees lip balm was on my list. Naturally, I got one, and a few other things too.

I love Burt’s Bees because on average 99.7% of their formulas are all natural. That means their products are ‘nasties’-free and I know that whatever I’m putting on my lips is good for them. They’re loaded with ingredients like beeswax, coconut oil and sunflower seed oil to name a few, and some are scented with peppermint oil.

What I love most about this natural beauty range, is that ingredients are community sourced (with half the beeswax coming from Tanzania and Uyowa) and that it is a home grown concept: a beekeeper and an artist left city life to live closer to nature in the wilds of Maine, USA. And through a serendipitous meeting, and a little leftover beeswax, Burt’s Bees was born. It was all based on the belief that nature has the best answers. And that no one can do everything, but everyone can do something.

They have also initiated a Bring Back the Bees Campaign – planting wildflowers, creating environments where bees can thrive.

Burt’s Bees also makes legendary hand, foot and body creams. Their Milk & Honey Body Lotion smells divine and never leaves a greasy film. It’s not a heavyweight lotion, so won’t be ideal if you’re looking for something creamier and more hydrating.

Their lip balms are well known and widely loved. From their lip balm sticks with flavours like Peppermint & Vitamin E, Mango and Coconut & Pear, to their classic lip balm in a tin, there is something for everyone.

Out of all the lip products, what’s my favourite? I absolutely love the Lip Shimmer in Strawberry. It’s minty fresh and makes your lips tingle. It’s perfect for on-the-go – you can’t mess it up (you never need a mirror). The pink colour is perfect and the formula is just the perfect amount of shimmer. It also has good staying power for a lip balm/shimmer hybrid. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it’s not as moisturizing as it could be. It’s a tiny bit grainy and not as smooth as you would expect a lip balm to be. That aside, another fabulous thing about this product is the price point. At R99 you can afford to have a few favourite colours in your handbag. The Lip Shimmers are available in 8 different colours.
