Recently I attended a launch for two new products, both of which are touted as anti-ageing, so I was super amped.

Exuviance AF Vitamin C20 Serum Capsules

Exuviance describes their Vitamin C20 Serum Capsules as: “Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) is an essential co-factor in collagen synthesis, known for its power to strengthen skin’s matrix, improve skin firmness and smooth wrinkles, as well as brighten spots for a more even, radiant complexion. A potent antioxidant, vitamin C helps neutralize oxidative damage from everyday environmental exposure to decelerate signs of aging.”

How to use?

At night time, before your moisturiser – the serum sinks in really easily. I use it 2-3 times weekly, making sure to exfoliate beforehand for maximum product penetration.

Vitamin C is formulated to restore firmness, smooth lines, brighten uneven tone and is the reason why my skin is glowing and more even. Whenever I use a capsule, I wake up in the morning to absolutely glowing, radiant and refreshed skin.

I am loving these capsules and would recommend them to anyone looking to soften fine lines or even out skin tone. The only thing I don’t enjoy (although I kinda do, because it makes me think of popping candy on my skin) is the bursting, stinging sensation produces on my skin (apparently this doesn’t happen to everyone). If it does happen to you, just mix one capsule into your night time moisturiser and apply to skin. Or don’t and enjoy the pain.

Oh, and if you travel, you will love these babies! There’s no need to carry the whole bottle, you can just pop a few of these capsules into your toiletry bag.

Importantly, don’t eat them! They’re not for ingestion. They’re filled with serum for application only.

Even though I received them as a press sample, I would definitely use my own money to buy them in the future. Available at Dermastore here for R1160 per bottle.

NeoStrata® Skin Active Tri-Therapy Lifting Serum

NeoStrata Skin Active Tri-Therapy Lifting Serum is a silky serum formulated with a proprietary triple anti-ageing complex to help volumise slack skin, renew skin tone and smooth rough texture while improving overall signs of photo-damage. It is formulated for both those showing signs of early and more mature skin ageing. Not suitable for sensitive or rosacea skins.

How to use?

Apply 3-5 drops to your face after cleansing – morning and evening.

The heavy glass bottle has an elegant ombré silver tint, and an easy-to-use dropper. The serum is a lightweight, slightly milky gel, which is absorbed in a flash, without any residue. It feels so gentle and refreshing to apply and my skin immediately feels luxuriously soft. After a month of use, my skin looks more plumped out and a little firmer.  A small amount goes a long way.

The Tri-Therapy Lifting Serum is formulated to rejuvenate ageing skin in three different ways:

Volumising slack skin with Aminofil, a patented amino acid derivative. This is supposed to plump and firm so the skin looks lifted. The effect is subtle and my skin looks soft and plumped up after a month of use.
Evening skin tone with gluconolactone to exfoliate. This molecule is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) which is gentler than AHA and with an added moisturising effect. I haven’t really noticed much of an overall lightening effect, but my skin is fair.
Smoothing skin with low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, which moisturises and plumps skin up. My fine lines look a little less ‘liney’. I haven’t used the product for 3 months consistently, but I can confidently say that I have noticed an increase in my skin’s luminosity when I do use this product.

As with any other beauty product, in order for the “magic” to happen, consistency is key. Remember that while this will help to improve the skin laxity, no topical product alone can give the results of a tightening skin procedure such as fractional laser or a surgical facelift. This serum can also be used to enhance the results of these treatments.

Available at Dermastore here for R 1035.

Last week I attended the launch for a very cool range of products from the pHformula brand. Who is pHformula you ask? They are a pharma-cosmeceutical from Barcelona, who find themselves between new generation cosmeceuticals and doctor’s practices. They offer products targeting concerns like ageing, hyperpigmentation, acne and chronic redness. You can also find them at medi spas with their skin resurfacing treatments addressing all of the aforementioned. (Most of the pHformula skin resurfacing products are not timed, neutralised or removed from the skin. Instead they are self-neutralising and left on the skin. This is quite a unique approach to skin resurfacing and seems gentler to me, as every peel that I’ve done had to be neutralised.) The great thing about them is that they offer customised, specific-to-your-skin treatments by testing your skin first to discover your tolerance levels.  With pHformula, one size does not fit all, and that’s what I like about the brand. They also offer home-care products as part of their treatments and a multifunctional, complexion correcting C.C. Cream.

The creams I want to tell you about today are so cool and nifty. Also really wonderful and full of active ingredients. pHformula believes that beautiful skin starts with vitamins. Because nutrition and beautiful skin are so closely linked, what better way to introduce a vitamin kick in the form of targeted facial creams? Introducing the Vita A, Vita B and Vita C 24 hour vitamin creams, all rich in essential vitamins at high concentration levels with a 24-hour moisture-retaining complex.

If you had to choose one, which one would you choose?

Keep lines, wrinkles and dull skin at bay with Vitamin A

What it does:

Retinol is the term used for the entire vitamin A molecule. Applied to the skin, retinol is a beneficial cell-communicating ingredient and an antioxidant. Simply put, it helps skin cells create better, healthier skin cells.

Why it’s recommended by Dermatologists?:

Retinol has been shown to increase skin’s collagen production and glycosaminoglycan content, resulting in firmer skin with an improved texture and enhanced barrier function*. It is a fantastic anti-ageing product.

(Not everyone can tolerate retinol and may people’s skin cannot tolerate any amount of prescription retinoid without experiencing discomfort and desirable side effects. Retinol’s most common side effects include flaking, sunburned-like skin. You can manage this by applying retinol less frequently.)

Use this cream only at night. It can be used as often as your skin will allow.

Get a healthy glowing skin with vitamin B3

What it does:

Also known as Niacinamide, topically applied vitamin B3 has been shown to increase ceramide and fatty acid levels in skin, prevent skin from losing water content, and stimulate microcirculation in the dermis.

Why it’s recommended by Dermatologists?:

It can improve skin’s elasticity, dramatically enhance skin’s barrier function*, help erase discolourations, and revive skin’s healthy tone and texture.

You can use this cream daily and nightly, with no hassle.

Retain your smooth, youthful skin with Vitamin C

What it does:

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant with mutiple anti-ageing benefits.

Why it’s recommended by Dermatologists?:

Topically applied vitamin C has been shown to increase collagen production, strengthen skin’s barrier, reduce the appearance of skin discolouration, enhance skin’s repair process, reduce inflammation and help skin better withstand exposure to sunlight, whether protected by sunscreen or not.

You can use this cream daily and nightly.

*What’s all this talk about ‘barrier function’? Barrier function is one of the most important aspects of healthy skin, and is strongly endorsed by pHformula. A compromised barrier function can lead to breakouts, dehydration, sensitisation and premature ageing. Some products can compromise barrier integrity by stripping or over-exfoliating the skin.

What I love about these creams:

♥ They are full of active ingredients and really work! I used the Vita A cream two days in a row (silly me) and my skin started to peel about 5 days later. This is normal though, and now I know that I should only be using it once a week. When I use the Vita C cream, my face has such a radiant glow to it, which obviously I love!

The base of each cream is a 24-hour hydration formula, which in addition to hydrating your skin, combats drying effects of, for example, retinol.

Because you need to surprise your skin from time to time, I love the concept of making a vitamin cocktail every other day to shock it (in a good way). You can use all 3 creams separately, but are also able to layer them to create a cocktail boost.

I love the packaging, How cute! Vitamins for your face.

♥  The Vita A cream can be used as a spot treatment for unwanted guests on your face.

Available at selected salons, medi spas and doctors’ rooms. Vita A, B and C creams retail for approximately R800 for each 45ml bottle. If you want more info, go here to read more.

I’m a big fan of facial mists (especially in the Summer) (except when I’ve just blow dried my hair) so I was more than happy to give Dermalogica’s Antioxidant Hydramist a go. According to Dermalogica it is a “Convenient mist-on formula supplements skin’s protective barrier by creating an active antioxidant shield of White Tea, Licorice and Vitamin E to fight damaging free radicals, while a patented polypeptide helps prevent the signs of aging caused by Advanced Glycation End-products a damaging byproduct of sugar/protein reactions in the skin). A highly-active Vitamin C complex, combined with collagen-stimulating peptides, encourages firmness and elasticity to help reduce the appearance of fine lines. Hyaluronic Acid acts as a hydration magnet to quench dehydrated skin while Pea Extract creates instant firming action to lift and tighten. Rose and Clove extracts comfort and refresh skin. Contains no artificial fragrance or color“.
